Citizens of Falton

Citizens of Falton

On behalf of, and with the divine authority granted me thereof, the senate and people of the Transcendental Roaman Empire, I henceforth write this missive. In order that suppositions of calamity or dubiety may be avoided, I begin with an assurance that the citizens of falton need neither fear—for themselves, property, or livelihoods—nor be alarmed. The Transcendental Roaman Empire has, in recent days, erected a peacekeeping garrison in a forest, The Continentoris Castellum, some miles away from the boundaries of faltonian lands. As I write this, in the capitol of Roam, whence the citizens of the Transcendental Roaman Empire have already embarked for settlement in the lands adjacent to our newest garrison, I extend an “olive branch,” so to speak, to the citizens of falton.
Most any faltonian who should wish is enabled, and indeed encouraged to seek citizenship in Roam and a place for homesteading in this new settlement. To him, who chooses thus, we shall thereupon confer all the rights, privileges, and obligations of a citizen of the Transcendental Roaman Empire.

What benefits would be conveyed to new citizens of the Transcendental Roaman Empire, you might be asking? Our garrison provides the utmost stability and protection to Roaman citizens. We protect our citizens from the elitist machinations of corrupt officials and tax collectors—an issue which has, to my ear, become a recent problem in Falton. On the other hand, any and all taxes, fees, and tarrifs imposed upon Roman citizens are subject to argument and recompense before the legal courts in Roam, where an equitable and satisfactory agreement should be sought. In addition, the Transcendental Roaman Empire maintains preferential trade rights for her citizens with many local traders, merchants, and companies. Why, there are even those in Falton now who offer lower rates and fees, all due to the support granted them by the Transcendental Roaman Empire.
And before I am able to close this letter, I must assuage the fears that Roaman citizenship would require forfeiture of assets, lands, or ownership. Should any man come to join with the Transcendental Roaman Empire, all that would be required of him is that he swear an oath to the senate, detailing his loyalty, and that he should, only temporarily, forsake any title of nobility he should hold in lands which have not yet aggregated to the Transcendental Roaman Empire. Whenever these other lands should join, he should be reinstated to a position of equal or greater rank in his old lands, if, that is, he should wish.

It is with this statement that I bring this first missive to its proper closing. My agents will copy and spread these papers around Falton, and as I plan my travels to the Castellum, I am without doubt that I shall be greeted by shining Faltonian Faces.

Translated into Simple Talk, this roughly says that Roam comes in peace, and offers citizenship to any who wish to join the Roaman Empire.

  1. Fine words, but when one gilds the manure of one’s beast of burden, alas, it is nonetheless still manure.

  2. More detailed “Simple Talk”: Roam is making a settlement & garrison near Falton, any Faltonian who would like can seek Roaman citizenship and settle there. Perks of Citizenship include a) “protection” by the garrison, b) the ability to argue in court about how much tax/tarriff/whatever a citizen should have to pay, c) discounts with local merchants (which may include establishments such as the Lonelee Road Tavern).
The requirements for Citizenship are an oath of loyalty to the Senate of Roam, and temporarily letting go of any noble title that isn’t in Roaman territory. Once Roam absorbs the area a person was Lord/Lady/whatever over, they can receive their noble title back.
Kudos to the writer, this is very well done! Very Roman – I mean Roaman 😉
