And now the Story…
24 BE (Before Exodus): The nation is not doing well. Pollution is high, cities are over crowed, and resources to fix the problems have run very very low. Wildlife exists only in small, highly protected preserves, but the government is talking of taking down the walls and using what little supplies are left inside. Riots are not uncommon.
19 BE: Hospitals are overflowing with patients who have dealt with food poisoning and polluted water. Many choose to stay at home rather than wait for hours in line to see a doctor. Consequently, disease runs rampant.
16 BE: The economy is dropping as many people stay home from work sick. Solutions to these issues are at the bottom of the list on the political agenda as more pressing issue, like how to control the distribution of clean food and water, rise to the top.
10 BE: Rumors have started to spread that the government is keeping many of the remaining precious stores to themselves. Whispers give rise to shouts as the question is asked: Why aren’t they fixing this?
7 BE: The police and National Guard turn from the borders to the cities as mobs and riots break out. Violence continues to get worse when they use force to restrain the crowds. Things escalate quickly as each side tries to gain the upper hand. Demands for answers are flung at government buildings in the shape of both words and vandalism. The only response is: A solution is coming.
5 BE: Symbols began to show up all over the place. The shape of a lightning bolt in the middle of a circle are spray painted on walls, carved on the streets, and painted on windows. Nobody is ever seen writing these symbols but they are everywhere.
4 BE: A police headquarters is mostly demolished by a series of bombs that went off. The only evidence as to who is responsible is a single symbol scratched on the only wall that remained standing. It was a lightning bolt in a circle.
3 BE: Since the first bombing, many more bombings and robberies have taken place across the nation. The robberies are aimed at military bases and government buildings. Once the robbery has taken place, the building is blown up to destroy all remaining evidence. Authorities struggle to maintain a semblance of control as mobs, robberies, and bombings become daily occurrences.
1 BE: A national, 24 hour a day curfew is announced. Anyone who leaves their house will be immediately jailed. The promise is restated: A solution is coming.
0 BE: Finally, the end of the long wait arrives. Scientists and engineers have been working around the clock for years to create what has been called, ‘The Exodus.’ In secret, two enormous orbiting colonies have been built around the moon. Self-sustaining and able to support millions of people, these bases are the new home of the nation.
Massive doors open in the center of every major city and platforms rise out of the ground. On the platforms are dozens of large space craft, capable of carrying thousands at a time. The people are commanded to retrieve their belongings and make their way to the center of the city. Finally, salvation has come! Law enforcement keeps a wary eye on the surroundings as they direct people into the carriers. Once every ship is filled, the remaining people are told they the current ships will ferry the people into an orbiting space cruiser and then return to make a second and final trip. Everyone is gathered into a waiting building filled with monitors to watch the first ships take off. Joyous conversions are everywhere as people discuss the prospect of a brand new, un-tainted home. Every eye turns to the screens as the countdown begins. Rumbling shakes the earth as fleets of ships rise like angles into the darkened sky. Then, just as the space craft reach the border of vision, one of them explodes. Fire and smoke paint a vivid image against the black sky. Then a second ship explodes and a third, until the atmosphere is covered in flaming wreckage. Mouths gaping, the world is in shock.
The monitors suddenly shift to a single lightning bolt in the center of a red circle.
1 AE: The population is even more confused and depressed. Most lost friends and family; many died from the falling debris; others died simply because they could not find the will to live. Any sort of unity or organization of the nation has fallen into ruin. It has become survival of the fittest.
3 AE: As the common aim is to survive, some join together and create clans. Although wary at first, the members of each clan are fiercely loyal to each other. Who else can they trust?
-Today-
Five years after the failed Exodus, there are whispers spreading among the clans that it may be time to rebuild. There are the scattered ‘towns’ that host fair trades and safe refuge, but no attempt has been made to raise up a second nation. The mysterious lightning bolt hasn’t been seen for years. Many think that the ones responsible for the sign died in the turmoil that followed that day of sadness. Although there is tension when the clans come in contact with each other, ammo is in short supply so firefights are rare. Debris still rains down from the atmosphere from time to time but not in the density of the first few years. For a world in pain, things are relatively peaceful.
Now is the time to start anew.
