Spilling the Beans / Open Kimono. 4/x

This LARP will be different.  I want you to know what to expect so you can maximize the fun for all. Your Costume:  Drab.  Greys and browns and dirty whites.  (Did you see Hunger Games?  Color defines wealth, and you ain’t wealthy.)  Of course, this is Steampunk, so leather is always welcome, as are goggles and gears and a little brass and such.  If you wear anything colorful, it must be kerchief-sized or smaller.

Spilling the Beans / Open Kimono. 3/x

Your Character:  Unless you have been given specific instructions, on March 21st, you will arrive at the mine called “Undertown” on a train from London.  You are a miner.  You are part of the lower-lower middle class of a London.  You have been “drafted” to work in the mines to retrieve the necessary minerals to support the war effort.  Come with whatever backstory/attitude/accent you want, but all that really matters is that you are a …

CANCELLED – Feb 15 LARP – CANCELLED

With sad heart, this notice announces the official cancellation of the Torchlight LARP Steampunk Mining event on Saturday, February 15th. My father-in-law is expected to be released from the hospital tomorrow, and will be in hospice care.  The best guess is that he has only days to live.  Family is coming into town this weekend.  We’ll look for another date, but nothing can be planned until we get to the other side of this. Stryder …

Whatever it takes!

So this is what it’s like to be common. Last week I was researching the possibility that Cholera is a disease transmitted through the water.  Today, I’m working in the mines next to chimney sweeps and brush makers.  War has a way of upending civilization.  This is hard work, but I don’t mind.  I’m proud to do my part to support the war effort by mining for the raw materials our nation needs. We are …

Why?

I don’t get it.  Sure, a miner is at the bottom of the pecking order – about 200’ below everyone else in fact.  But why do they flaunt it?  They took my red sweater!  They took Martha’s blue scarf, and Michael’s green hat.  We need these for warmth in the mine, but they said “No!”  They said only the mine owners are allowed to wear colors. Only they can wear pretty colors larger than a …

We’re So Lucky!

Thoughts from the deep within the tunnel: Whether due to crime, poverty or physical infirmity, you have been sent to the mines. Others you know were not so lucky. Two trains left the city. One train taking its occupants to the mines; the other to the front lines of the war. Those on the train to the front lines will never come back. At least on the mine train you have a chance to return …
